HENRIK - STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL BIG HALIBUTS

After his record Halibut catch Henrik has faced a lot of interest from journalists from different media.
This article was written in Nordlys - the local newspaper in North Norway.

Just follow this link to see the article: http://www.nordlys.no/nyheter/article5638172.ece

I talked with Henrik this afternoon on his mobilphone  - he was still out fishing ( had to make only one more drift he said) and minutes ago he had lost a big - more than one meter - halibut. He also had another visitor - a seal - which  took his Panther Martin rubberfish - but fortunately he lost it after a hell of a outrun.

Friday the MV "BigFisher " goes offshore with Kayaks, anglerfriends and hopefully a lot of good "haill" before departure - haill is something you need to get the biggest Halibuts !!!
Stay tuned !!

HENRIK GOES CRAZY AGAIN !!

Yesterday Henrik had a new, hard fight in Kvalsund - a 175 cm Halibut , 70,5 kilo without blood.

Could this be a new Halibut World record from Kayak ????

Follow this link to the Norwegian newspaper VG and enjoy the story !!!

This weekend I have been working "dugnad"  at Finnkroken Bygdemuseum to help them to make a new boathouse. During the weekend I had many hot and emotional  messages from Henrik - "The sun is shining out of my ass :-)) 140 cm", "I need a shoulder to lean on and cry at :-((  " - 175 cm safe at the beach :-))  and in the nice weather I am very sorry that I couldn't join Henrik hunting for the big Halibuts, but there is still early in the season!!!

The 170 cm was a hard fight - Harpuned and went down several times. With assistance from a local seagull HENRIK won the fight.

Together with my friends Henrik and Ringo I had a nice fishing trip in Kvalsund outside Tromsø today. The weather was nice after two days with gale conditions, and it's good to see that there is a lot of nice cod in the area. Today we had no halibuts, but a week ago I had a fight with two of them.

" Fishin' is the Mission  "

"Fishin is the mission". - Preparing for the season !!

Just arrived in Tromsø after wonderful days in Thailand.
The" BigFisher" is seaborn, and need some minor maintenance on heaters and gear shift cables.
The new Volvo Tamd 63 engine is running very good, and hopefully in a week we are ready for action.

I have noticed lately that some local sporting anglers and professional fishermen are worried about the increasing numbers of tourist anglers in the area, and that they are conserned about the future for the local fisheries. In the last Years we have seen that catfish, cod and halibuts have been more and more popular targets for anglers from abroad.

Last year I experienced very good fishing in this area, and it will be interesting to see how this year will turn out.

Tourist fishing represents good income for many local communities along the Norwegian coast, and many people have a major part of their income from this business. Today more people are employed at tourist fishing camps than in the professional ordinary fish industry, and the value from this tourist fishing represents today about 1500 Nok pr. Kilo fish - this is almost
100 times more than from the ordinary fish industry.

The pressure on the fishing resources from tourist fishing is increasing, but compared to the
equipment used by professional fishermen - long lines and nets - Reels and rods will, as far as I can understand, never be the major threat to the fishresources in Norwegian waters.

It is indeed very important to be aware of the different interests, and consequently establish good and fair regulations for this activity as soon as possible.

In the planning process of the Kvaløyvågen camp we have made a proposal to cooperate with the Authorities of fishing - Fiskarfylkingen- in making this camp to a pioneer camp as far as new and good rules are concerned.

My experience is that many of the companies in this business today Are very professional and well organized. They have already implemented very good rules and routines that can be used as
examples for the future regulations that has to be established to organized this activity.

The lack of good regulations today represents a problem for all interests involved.

The main regulation that excist today is that a tourist can bring no more than 15 kg of fish out of Norway. Today there is no restrictions in how much a tourist can fish or dump or to which areas he can go fishing. We need better rules for three main reasons- first to prevent
fighting beetween professional and tourist fishermen. Second we need rules to secure the fisheries for future generations, and third it is necessary to have equipment standards and good security rules.
Some areas of high importance to the professional fishermen has probably to
be more protected , and the number of fishes to be taken out has to be determined.

It is very important both to the tourist fishing industry and the professional fishermen to
secure the resources for the benefit of the future - No fish means bad business !!!

The Municipality of Tromsoe ( Tromsø Kommune ) - the Urban Development Committee - approved in their meeting the 7.th of December 2010 the principle plan from Vaagen Utvikling AS ( Vaagen Development Ltd.)to build facilities for tourism in Kvaløyvågen, an existing and very active fishing village about 30 minutes drive ouside the city of Tromsø, North Norway. It is easy access by direct flight connections to the capitol of North Norway- the city of Tromsø - from many cities in Germany, Estland, Litauen, Poland, France, Spain, Sweden, Russia, Finland and England.
The facilities will include:

The facilities will be kept in an old fashioned coastal style with fishermen cabins in different sizes. Fully developed the village will consist of 30 fisherman houses.

The overall plan also include a coastal culture center developed in old buildings from a previous fish farm inside the village area. This will be done in cooperation with the local community develpoment team, the coastal culture association Arctandria, which have a great collection of old traditional boats - "nordlandsbåter" and "fembøringer".
The Municipality of Tromsø, the Culture Departement, has expressed a positive intention to cooperate in the development of this project
