HOW TO CATCH A HALIBUT

Check this video from the newspaper "NORDLYS". A guy has hooked a nice cod by his rod, and a hungry halibut follows the cod all the way up to the surface. New Giant halibut from Kjøllefjord - Finnmark

Foto: Angelreisen Hamburg The german angler Marco Liebenow is now member of my 200 + "Halibut Hall of Fame" by catching this giant Halibut on his rod the 4. th of July 2013. The halibut measured 2,63 meter and had a weight of 233,5 kg !! Congratulations to Germany !

GIANT HALIBUT AT ARNØYA

In late June 2013 the guys Tim pedersen an Jim-Roar Olsen got the fish of their lifetime outside Arnøya just north of Ringvassøy in Troms. The halibut caught by net was estimated to 220 kg. ANOTHER BIG HALIBUT OUTSIDE RINGVASSØY

The local sportfisher Gøte Nilsen from Tromsø caught this giant halibut on his rod just outside Ringvassøy in the middle of may 2013. The halibut measured 241 cm and wight at 183 kg !! Congratulations ! Now we go for the 200 + !!!

GIANT WHALE STRANDED

Pictures from "Nordlys" A 18 meter long whale - in Norwegian " Finnhval " was stranded and died outside the coast of Finnmark, North Norway. The Norwegian coastguard had to tow the dead whale out in deep waters to avoid pollution of the beaches around. Its a tragedy and painful to see this wonderful animal stranded without a chance to escape.

MONSTERFISH

Picture from "Nordlys" This monsterfish was landed by a local fisherman just outside Kvaløy, Tromsø. It is a Trachipterus arcticus - or Silver Halibut in english. In Norwegian it is called Sølvkveite. The fish is very rare and lives in deep waters 300 - 600 meters in the North East Atlantic. The fish can be up to 300 cm. long. BIG WHALES IN KVALSUND, TROMSØ

The last weeks a lot of big whales have been hunting for herring just outside Kvaløyvågen, Tromsø.
Translated to english Kvaløyvågen means the Whale Island Bay  and Kvalsundet means the Whale Sound.
It is good to see that these big wild animals are back in their traditional habitats.

Just outside Tromsø - in Halibut Kingdom - giant sharks - in norwegian named Håkjerring - are possible to hunt for in deep water. These giants can be up to 7 meter and several hundreds of kilo. 
Some years ago the local fishermen used to catch these sharks only for the valuable liver.  During the last  30 years this fishing has been forgotten , but I believe this nowadays is a very interesting challenge for keen anglers. I have studied old papers and found out where to catch these monsters.
The giant sharks normally stay on deep water - 300 meter and deeper - and a piece of flesh is a good bait. Outside Spitzbergen you can find them on more shallow waters , and it is told that fishermen have found even Polarbear-kids in their stomach.
This year we will try to catch some of these monsters from the MV BigFisher - reports will follow!!!

The 2,06 BIG HALIBUT ONBOARD M/V "BigFisher"

 

 

On sunday the 21.th of October 2012 I hooked the fish of my dreams - a 2 meter and 6 cm big Halibut !!
Penn Overeas pro 50 lbs rod, , Penn Formula Graph-Lite GLD 20 II reel and owner circle-hook worked perfect !

Dreams can come true !!!

- all together we managed to lift the 100 + big Halibut into the M/V " BigFisher" .

AUTUMN IN HALIBUT KINGDOM

A SMALL BEAUTY

In spite of gail warnings Henrik and I had a wonderful fishing trip to the Halibut Kingdom the 22/ 23 of September 2012.

The weather became perfect, and we landed two beautiful small halibuts. The 100 + are still out there waiting for us, and hopefully we will see them before wintertime. Or in the years to come :-)))

When the weather is OK - there's no better place on earth to spend a weekend than in Halibut Kingdom outside Tromsø.

On this video professional Fishing Guide Henrik Bolten is preparing his rubberfish for new adventures - both Henrik and I have learned a lot from our good friend NSA Fishing guide Burkhard Plichta who died in a car accident two years ago. On our trips we talk much about him and our experiences together - his soul will follow us on every future trip out here.

145 CM HALIBUT FROM KAYAK LAST NIGHT - JUST OUTSIDE KVALØYVÅGEN

Congratulations to Fishing Guide Henrik Bolten - last night he landed a 145 cm Halibut from his kayak. As far as I know he still has the kayak Halibut World record with his 175 cm from last year.

Hopefully the weather will stay good this weekend - just now the 100 + are waiting for the

M/V  "BigFisher". The weather forecast is fair - 6-8 m/s from southwest - this should be OK.

NIGHT FISHING IN MIDNIGHT SUN

Tromsø International Deep Sea Angling Competition took place in july 2012 outside Sommarøy, Tromsø.
The weather was perfect, and I am pleased to show you som of my pictures from the competition. Onboard the M/V "BigFisher" we were three anglers - Kurt Andreassen, Tromsø Deep Sea Angling Club, Kjell Torbjørnsen, Stavanger HK and Morten Willumsen, Tromsø Deep Sea Angling Club and skipper.
After 5 hours of fishing at night in midnight sun and flat water  from 2 AM till 7 AM we had filled all boxes and the deck space with big sei ( pollock). More than 1200 kg of sei - 22 full boxes - was delivered to the fish plant at Sommarøy. All the income from the fish is given to Tromsø Deep sea Angling Club - an important contribution to the administration of the club.

THE HALIBUT SUMMER

Many Nice Halibut catches outside Tromsø this summer.
This summer has been cold and clouded, but the fishing around Tromsø has been very good. A lot of nice Halibut-catches, but also big sei and big cod.
My experience is that the autumn is the best period for the big Halibuts, and "BigFisher" is prepared for ther big catches.
This autumn we are going for the 100 + halibuts - Burkhards champagne from Bad
Berleburg is still waiting onboard the "BigFisher".

The memory plate to the honour of my good friend - the fishing guide Burkhard who lost his life in a car accident..  The memory plate was put up on a rock on the Kirkegårdsøya just outside Finnkroken, and I visited the memory place this summer together with Burkhards sister Gudrun and her husband Carsten.

The summer has been very busy for me - changing one of the engines on the "BigFisher" and building a new sauna and room for fishing equipment  at my fishing cabin in Finnkroken.

Looking forward two nice times with good friends out there in the future - the cabin is ready for action !!!

MIDNIGHT SUN ANGLING OUTSIDE TROMSØ

M/V " BigFisher" and it's 3 man strong crew made great success at the Tromsø International Deep Sea Fishing Competition in late july 2012. The fishing took place outside Kvaløya, Tromsø, and during ten hours of fishing over two nights with 3 rods we landed more than 2000 kg cod and pollock.

This was new record onboard the "BigFisher", and was also the best average catch on one boat in the history of Tromsø Deep sea Fishing competition.

The last night we could deliver 22 full professional fishboxes to the local fishdealer.
 The income from the fish goes to the Tromsø Deep Sea Fishing Club - good money for the club !!
All the 8 participating boats could deliver around 12000 kg of perfect quality fish from two nights of competition.

MB "SmallFisher"

A Capelli 20 foot open boat with 115 HK four stroke Suzuki specially outfitted for keen fishermen will be used to check out the fishingareas around Kvaløyvågen this summer. Fishing Guide Henrik Bolten has already landed some nice Halibuts in Kvalsund from his Ocean Torque Kayak this year - this will be an interesting season - no doubt about that.

MB "SmallFisher"

MB " SmallFisher " is ready for action in some days, and I look forward to go for halibuts also in  shallow water. MV "BigFisher" is just now lying in the marina having some necessary service, and will be ready in the beginning of june for new adventures.

The Halibuts are back again - the adventure has just started

THE HALIBUT WINTER

Dear anglerfriends - I am very happy to serve you a New Year with a lot of new possibilities.

It's an amazing cod fishing taking place outside Tromsø - North Norway just now. The big arctic cod - we call it "SKREI" - is now coming up to our coast from the Barentz Sea to breed.

The professional fishermen are going completely crazy now - and they are making good money every day. Hopefully the weather will stay good for many weeks and the "BigFisher" is almost ready for new adventures.

Wintertime is fishinggear time, and I really look forward to test Roy Polinskis 40 cm rubber fishes after the BIG halibuts in April. They look very good, and have a very good movement in the water, The colours are great - both dark ones for dark weather and bright ones for sunny days.
