GOD JUL OG GODT NYTTÅR !!

JULESTEMNING I FINNKROKEN

1. byggetrinn vil stå ferdig i august 2014.

KVALSUND VED TROMSØ

FLOTT KVEITE SEPTEMBER 2013

Neste år er det nye muligheter -   FISHIN' IS THE MISSION !!

R.I.P. Professional Fishing Guide HENRIK BOLTEN

The Professional Fishing guide and Halibut Kayak Fishing world record holder Henrik Bolten from Lippstadt, Germany has left us.

A bad accident took your life  while  cutting a big tree in your garden in Lippstadt.

Henrik - you have been a very good friend, and together we have explored the waters around Tromsø, North Norway for big halibuts for some years.

Together with our fishing buddy - Professional Fishing guide  Burkhard Plichta from Bad Berleburg, Germany -  who died in a car accident 3 years ago outside Tromsø - and our good friend Guenter Storr -   we have made great expeditions and successful halibut fishing outside Tromsø in Halibut Kingdom.

Henrik With 175 cm Halibut - October 2013

Onboard my vessel M/V " BigFisher" we had so many memorable trips together - this I will never forget.

It's hard to face a future up here in the far North without your good companionship dear Henrik - on our last trip in october this Autumn - we spoke a lot about the future.

You had found your favorite place in the world - it was up here in Halibut Kingdom.
The Nice Places Sørreisa, Mefjordvær, Sommarøy, Kvaløyvågen, Hav og Fjell, Finnkroken - all these Places you loved and were welcomed as a close friend.

Up here you wanted to start your own business together with good friends as a Professional Fishing guide and buy your own vessel, and we wanted to cooperate also from our future  Halibutfishing camp in Kvaløyvågen outside Tromsø.

The last two years you have been a local guide for KINGFISHER, and you have been very successful with this. You was Professional and determined, and I know that your guests were very satisfied with your guiding.
This season you told med that you had landed  almost 90 halibuts during your trips - thats your strongest personal record.

Kayak Fishing for halibut was your special perfection- in this nobody in the world could beat you.

You could stay out on the kayak from early morning till late in the evening - even sleeping on the kayak while trolling you managed to do.

In 2011 you landed a 175 cm Halibut just outside Kvaløyvågen from your kayak - and this is still as far as I know the world record.

Your Fishing skills were outstanding, and I have learned a lot from you about equipment, tackles and
 baits.

Its heartbraking to know that you have left these hunting Fields, but like we have done with Burkhard - both of you will follow us on every future trip onboard the M/V  " Big Fisher "

We will not forget you, dear Henrik !

WONDERFUL SEPTEMBER IS HERE

Nice sunny day for skipper Morten on M/V "BigFisher" in Halibut Kingdom
Well prepared for the big ones

Nice Halibut 1,25 meter - "Catch and deepfreeze"

Last weekend I had a wonderful trip with M/V "BigFisher" . The weather was Perfect and Fishing was good.
Big codfish up to 20 kg, pollock, Mackerel and halibut was  out there just waiting for my baits.

The 1,25 meter halibut took a big 30 cm wobbler while I was trolling at about 2 knots - a great experience.

Look forward to many Nice days this Autumn in Halibut Kingdom outside Tromsø, North Norway.

NEW WORLD RECORD GREENLAND HALIBUT OUTSIDE TROMSØ

The Greenland halibut catch was done with a net on deep water - 400 meter deep outside Tromsø, North Norway. Normally most of the catches are under 10 kg. The females can be up to 20 kg, but males are seldom more than 10 kg.

Check this article in the Tromsø newspaper " NORDLYS " :

http://www.nordlys.no/nyheter/article6812057.ece

From Wikipedia :
The Greenland halibut ( in norwegian Blåkveite - in German Schwarzer Heilbutt) ) or Greenland turbot (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) belongs to the Pleuronectidae family (the right eye flounders), and is the only species of the genus Reinhardtius. It is a deepwater fish distributed from 200 to 1600 m but has been caught at depths more than 2,200 m (7,200 ft). It is mainly found in waters with temperatures from 1-4 °C, but has also observed at sub-zero temperatures down to -2.1 °C.

It has a circumpolar distribution and is found in both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Its morphology with the left eye positioned on the dorsal ridge of the forehead gives it an appearance of a cyclops when looking straight at it. The central position of the left eye in the Greenland halibut probably gives it a much wider range of peripheral vision in comparison to other flatfish where the eye has migrated completely. The body shape is elongated and compressed dorsal-ventrally and muscles on both sides are equally developed.

Both sides are pigmented; however the left blind side is slightly lighter in color than the right side. Its physical appearance suggests it to be a vigorous swimmer that can swim in a vertical position. Vertical swimming has been observed during tagging experiments. However, video analyzing of Greenland halibut behavior in front of a bottom trawl showed no sign of swimming in a vertical position. Even though most Greenland halibut are caught in bottom fishing gears (trawl, longline and gillnet) they have also been caught in surface drift nets which indicates that they can have a pelagic occurrence. Stomach analysis has also shown that the diet consists mostly of pelagic or bathypelagic organisms. Even though the Greenland halibut is a flatfish it does at times behave more like a roundfish.

HOW TO CATCH A HALIBUT

Check this video from the newspaper "NORDLYS". A guy has hooked a nice cod by his rod, and a hungry halibut follows the cod all the way up to the surface. GIANT WHALE STRANDED

Pictures from "Nordlys" A 18 meter long whale - in Norwegian " Finnhval " was stranded and died outside the coast of Finnmark, North Norway. The Norwegian coastguard had to tow the dead whale out in deep waters to avoid pollution of the beaches around. Its a tragedy and painful to see this wonderful animal stranded without a chance to escape.

MONSTERFISH

Picture from "Nordlys" This monsterfish was landed by a local fisherman just outside Kvaløy, Tromsø. It is a Trachipterus arcticus - or Silver Halibut in english. In Norwegian it is called Sølvkveite. The fish is very rare and lives in deep waters 300 - 600 meters in the North East Atlantic. The fish can be up to 300 cm. long. If you want more information about this fish you can copy this link : http://www.fishbase.org/summary/Trachipterus-arcticus.html

BIG WHALES IN KVALSUND, TROMSØ

The last weeks a lot of big whales have been hunting for herring just outside Kvaløyvågen, Tromsø.
Translated to english Kvaløyvågen means the Whale Island Bay  and Kvalsundet means the Whale Sound.
It is good to see that these big wild animals are back in their traditional habitats.

Follow this link and see what some japanese people experienced together with professional guides from Tromsø Friluftsenter and Maribell.

GIANT SHARKS

Giant shark - Håkjerring- hooked at 600 meter depth.
Old, rotten fish used as a bait  ( Photo P3 )

SHARK FISHING IN NORWAY
PUSH THIS LINK - SCROLL DOWN TO THE VIDEO

Just outside Tromsø - in Halibut Kingdom - giant sharks - in norwegian named Håkjerring - are possible to hunt for in deep water. These giants can be up to 7 meter and several hundreds of kilo.
Some years ago the local fishermen used to catch these sharks only for the valuable liver.  During the last  30 years this fishing has been forgotten , but I believe this nowadays is a very interesting challenge for keen anglers. I have studied old papers and found out where to catch these monsters.
The giant sharks normally stay on deep water - 300 meter and deeper - and a piece of flesh is a good bait. Outside Spitzbergen you can find them on more shallow waters , and it is told that fishermen have found even Polarbear-kids in their stomach.
This year we will try to catch some of these monsters from the MV BigFisher - reports will follow!!!

AUTUMN IN HALIBUT KINGDOM

A SMALL BEAUTY

In spite of gail warnings Henrik and I had a wonderful fishing trip to the Halibut Kingdom the 22/ 23 of September 2012.

The weather became perfect, and we landed two beautiful small halibuts. The 100 + are still out there waiting for us, and hopefully we will see them before wintertime. Or in the years to come :-)))

When the weather is OK - there's no better place on earth to spend a weekend than in Halibut Kingdom outside Tromsø.

On this video professional Fishing Guide Henrik Bolten is preparing his rubberfish for new adventures - both Henrik and I have learned a lot from our good friend NSA Fishing guide Burkhard Plichta who died in a car accident two years ago. On our trips we talk much about him and our experiences together - his soul will follow us on every future trip out here.

145 CM HALIBUT FROM KAYAK LAST NIGHT - JUST OUTSIDE KVALØYVÅGEN

Congratulations to Fishing Guide Henrik Bolten - last night he landed a 145 cm Halibut from his kayak. As far as I know he still has the kayak Halibut World record with his 175 cm from last year.

Nice kayak halibut - The Fishing guide dog Ringo and Dominique are watching Henriks fight !!

Hopefully the weather will stay good this weekend - just now the 100 + are waiting for the

M/V  "BigFisher". The weather forecast is fair - 6-8 m/s from southwest - this should be OK.
